First Grade Parent Letter
December 8, 2005

Dear Parents,

Enclosed is your child’s Unit 3 Checking Progress (math test). It assessed time, odd numbers, money including fewest coins, frames and arrows, addition and subtraction. Students had the opportunity to fix any errors. If they were unable to correct their errors on their own, then they had to work one-on-one with support. Overall students were able to correct their errors on their own and had good concept of time, odd/even numbers, money, addition and subtraction. We began a new mathematics unit is called "Measurement and Basic Facts." It focuses on length measurement. Lesson activities will provide various opportunities for students to measure with nonstandard units, such as hand spans and paces, as well as with standard measurement, such as feet and inches, using a ruler and tape measure.

On Tuesday your child’s Onekama Public Library books are due. We will not be walking to the library to return them, but I will be happy to return them for you. If you would like to return them yourself, then you may return them to any Manistee County Public Library by the 14th.

On Wednesday our annual Christmas program will be held in the gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Your child needs to arrive to school at 6:45 p.m. in the classroom dressed in his/her Christmas best. Girls are invited to wear dresses and boys are invited to wear dress shirts and dress pants.

On Thursday the Onekama Public Library is hosting a Holiday Story Hour with Santa at 3:30 p.m.

Is winter here? On the days that winter is here, please be sure that your child has proper snow clothing that includes winter coat, snow pants, boots, hat, and gloves. Students will need to keep a dry pair of shoes at school, because they need to take off their snow boots after recess. This will avoid us sitting on wet, dirty carpet. If your child has extra snow pants and boots, then they are welcome to keep them at school for the week. On Fridays all belongings will be sent home for a good cleaning as will our cubbies. Also due to the cold, wet weather students will go to the gymnasium for lunch recess everyday throughout the winter season.

We’ve had several incidents with birthday invitations. If you need to have birthday invitations distributed, then please give them to me. I will put the invitations in student’s Thursday Folders so this will avoid hurt feelings. I would need invitations to me by Wednesday in order to give me ample time to distribute them in each child’s Thursday Folder. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
