Dear Kindergarten Families,

As promised I will give you all a summary of our progress throughout the month of September. The themes we have studied are the five senses, apples and caterpillars and butterflies. We have established a nice classroom community and the children understand our classroom rules and procedures. We have a great daily routine.

Our math learning has begun with counting by 5’s, 10’s and backwards, learning to write numbers, learning how a graph is made and learning to recognize numbers.

The letters we have studied so far are Ss, Aa, Bb and Cc. We have learned the sounds these letters make, how to write the letters and words that begin with the letters. We have also been studying each students name and what letters and syllables they all have in common.

Writing at this point is simply copying or tracing what I have written. I do quite a bit of modeling each day (talking and explaining while I am writing). As soon as all students have mastered the letters and their sounds we will begin our own Kindergarten writing.

We read together daily and the children are developing a knowledge of 2 to 4 letter words from my morning messages or songs and poems we sing. A few of the students are reading very well already so I have begun getting them started in a guided reading program.

I am very excited about how well the children have adapted thus far. This should definitely be a great year full of important learning experiences.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. What sound does the letter Bb make? What are some words that begin with Bb? What sound does Cc make? What are some words that begin with Cc?
  2. Can you tell me the life cycle of a caterpillar?
  3. What does a caterpillar eat before it spins its chrysalis?

Show and Tell is every Friday. Please have your child bring in something that begins with the letter of the week on that day. Tomorrow they need two items. One item that begins with Bb and another item that begins with Cc. Thank-you!!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz

P.S. Picture day is next week Tuesday! Please turn in your orders!!
