Thursday, October 28th, 2004 Dear Kindergarten Families, This week in our Kindergarten classroom we have been learning all about the letters Hh and Nn. We have been talking about nighttime and Halloween and doing many fun art projects. At the language center this week students completed their letter Hh book and letter Nn book and learned a letter Hh tongue twister as well as a letter Nn tongue twister. At the writing center students learned to write the letters Hh and Nn and also learned some words that begin with those letters. The math center contained a witch concoction with witch warts, ghost toes and skeleton bones, oh my! The students had to make a graph according to how much of each ingredient the concoction had. Then they used their graph to figure out which ingredient had the most and which ingredient had the least. At the theme art center students made a day picture and a night picture and labeled the objects in their pictures. Our Halloween party will begin at 1:20 on Friday afternoon. At this time we will be getting into costume and parading around the school. After the parade we have a few center games and activities planned and we will eat a fun party snack. |
Throughout the month of October we have completed many themes. We have talked about trees, leaves, pumpkins, nighttime and Halloween. The letters we have learned this month are Tt, Ll, Pp, Nn and Hh. We can write these letters, we know each of their sounds and we know words that begin with the letters. Yesterday, students stretched out and tried spelling a word by themselves. All of them were successful! Please be aware that I accept what is called Kindergarten spelling or inventive spelling. The children break words up into individual sounds and write down the letter sounds they hear. If you see some of their writing and worry because it is spelled incorrectly please dont be alarmed. Praise them for the writing they are able to do. At this point in Kindergarten I want them to use their knowledge of the letters and their sounds. Correct English spelling is not as important at this stage. We continue to read on a daily basis. We have been working hard at recognizing rhyming words. I engage the children in a variety of activities to help them hear words that rhyme. Please be sure to read to your child daily. It is so important. During the past month I have introduced measuring. Students learned and had many chances to practice measuring inches with a ruler. We have also been working on patterns. The children are able to make their own patterns as well as tell what type of pattern they are hearing or seeing. We continue to practice counting and recognizing numbers. Questions to ask your child this week are the following:
That is all for now. Enjoy the Halloween weekend!! Sincerely, Miss Schultz |
