Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week we have been doing many rhyming activities and have a center devoted to rhyme. Understanding rhyme is very important when learning to read. At the language center students completed the letter Rr book, learned two Rr tongue twisters and learned the Pat-a-cake rhyme and made a book of words that begin with the same letter of their first name. At the writing center students learned to write the letter Rr, drew a picture of something that begins with Rr, wrote a sentence about what they drew and found Rr words around the room to write and read. At the math center students completed a November calendar and played a number game to reinforce number sense. Our theme art center focused on rhyme with two drawing activities, reading The Cat and the Hat and listening for the rhyming pairs as well as making a cat in the hat and stretching out and writing words that rhyme with hat.

Please let me know if you or someone you know is interested in helping us out for an hour twice a week. Having volunteers for an hour each day is very important and I am unable to accomplish the things I do with the students unless I have the extra help during literacy center time. Thank-you!!

Our school schedule will be different next week due to conferences. On Thursday students will be dismissed at 12:30. Conferences will be held that evening beginning at 5:00 and ending at 8:00. There will be no school for students on Friday. Conferences will be held beginning at 8:00 am and ending at 11:00 am. Please be sure you call Mrs. Bergren in the office to make an appointment — 889-9678.

I also want to remind you to turn in your permission slip for Friday. The students are invited to see a dance performance at the Ramsdell theatre. We need to have your permission in order for your child to be able to attend.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. What is the letter Rr sound?
  2. Can you tell me 3-5 words that begin with the letter Rr?
  3. Can you name some rhyming pairs?
  4. After Friday, please ask your child what they liked about the dance performance.

Have a wonderful weekend! I look forward to talking with you at conferences!
