Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have been going buggy this week in kindergarten! Our literacy centers have focused on the topic of insects. At the theme art center students completed a book about insects. Their book tells about all the different parts of an insect.

At the language and writing center students read riddles about bugs and became bug detectives as they discovered what type of bugs the riddles described. They completed a bug mini-book and they chose a bug to write about in their journals.

At the math center students completed a May calendar. They were given a container full of all different varieties of plastic bugs and they made a graph according to a certain noticeable bug feature.

All of the chickens in Mr. K’s class have hatched and we had the opportunity to go and play with them. It has been fun learning about the stages these chicks go through. The kids have written about the stages and drawn pictures. Our baby chick stories are almost complete.

This morning we listened to a high school band from Leelanau School ("Mighty Snappy"). They are a talented bunch! What a treat it was to listen to them play their instruments!

Please visit the Onekama Village Park! Our class and Mrs. N’s class worked hard to make it look nice. We picked up trash and did some raking. It is ready for visitors!

I will begin collecting money for our Elk Ranch trip on May 26th. The cost is $1.00 per student. If you can come with us and be a chaperone your cost is $7.00. We will be gone for the entire day. More upcoming events are as follows:

  • Friday, May 6th — Gather mother’s day gifts at Mr. Hughes’s house
  • Wednesday, May 25th — Spring Sing (7:00)
  • Friday, May 27th — Reading Buddies Picnic @ Onekama Village Park
  • Wednesday, June 1st — Field Day (June 2nd is the rain date)
  • Friday, June 3rd — Last day for students

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. How many body parts does and insect have?
  2. How many legs does an insect have?
  3. Can you tell me what it means to be a philanthropist?
  4. Can you tell me some things you learned about the baby chicks?
