Dear Kindergarten Families,

When I was little I received book of poems written by Shel Silverstein. I always loved reading the poems from that book and I wanted to share that enjoyment with my students. I have read Shel Silverstein poems to them before and they have enjoyed those times. This week I decided to have the students do a variety of activities with his poetry.

At the theme art center students read a variety of poems and talked about their meanings. They also talked about the illustrations and how they helped bring even more life to the poems. They read the first lines of 2 poems and did a creative writing activity. Then they read the rest of the poems to find out how Shel Silverstein wrote creatively. They also made a poem journal to keep the activities we do and poems we read.

At the language and writing center I read a variety of poems and talked about the different features of a poem. The students completed a couple writing activities and then wrote their own poem.

At the math center students read a poem about number stories and did the actions the poem asked. They completed a number stories mystery activity and the experimented with the pan balance.
