Dear Kindergarten Families,

We are continuing our word family study. This week we learned about the —ig word family and the —og word family. The kids read the To Market, To Market rhyme in order to help them learn words from these 2 families. They also made a book of a few of the different words from the families and drew illustrations to help them understand each word. Our language and writing center also included many short reading and writing activities as we are constantly working on becoming better readers and writers.

At the math center students were given four cards with a different coin on each card. The kids were asked to put them in order from lowest value to highest value. Overall, each student was able to complete this task independently. After putting the coins in order they played store together in pairs by choosing an object from the room and having their partner write down a cost. Each child had many turns writing down costs with cent signs and counting out the correct change for their chosen item. Lastly, they were all introduced to the pattern block shapes hexagon, trapezoid and diamond. They used those three shapes as well as triangles and squares to make a picture and write about what they made.

Instead of having a theme art center this week we had a Science center in order to complete our unit about animals. The last part of the unit dealt with animal babies. We discussed similarities between babies and adults, learned the names for a variety of different baby animals and how adult animals care for their babies.

Next week is our kick-off to reading month. The elementary students and teachers will be involved in a variety of activities relating to The Magic School Bus book series. Our classroom is learning all about the Rainforest. In addition to classroom activities I would like your child to try and complete the attached reading month at-home task. All the students who return their task at the end of the month signed by you will receive a special treat from me. Have fun!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. Can you tell me a word from the —ig word family? How is that word spelled?
  2. Can you tell me a word from the —og word family? How is that word spelled?
  3. Can you tell me what baby zebra’s or horses are called?
  4. Can you tell me what baby monkeys are called?
  5. Can you tell me some of the things adult animals have to do for their baby? What is something your parents used to have to do for you, but now you can do by yourself?

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz kschultz@manistee.org
