The Flat Stanley Project helps to link schools from the United States. A classroom of Kindergarteners create a miniature version of themselves and the flat students are sent to various schools around the country. When we receive a student they arrive with a journal and some information about them and their school/classroom.

Our job as a classroom community is to take pictures of the activities we do during their one month stay. We write about our school and community. At the end we send the student back with a finished journal full of pictures and things to help them learn about our school. We also buy them a souvenir (Onekama t-shirt).

This is a great project to use when talking about the many states. I show the kids on the map where the student came from and we talk about that state.

Our "Flat Stanley" came from the state of Washington - Voyager Elementary School - Big Harbor, WA. Learning about him helps link our two schools and helps kids look outside their own school, town, state.
