1st and 7th Graders Learn About Diversity, a Core Democratic Value (CDV)

I had a lot of fun with the 1st grade class. They looked like they really enjoyed it. We were trying to show them that being prejudice is wrong. We gave them food from different cultures, read them books about prejudice, sang a song about accepting others, and presented skits about discrimination. I hope they learned something from it. ...by Mallory Mattson

The best part was was when the kids were listening to the story. They were so quiet. It was like being in a graveyard, but during our culture skits they cheered and clapped. We were there to talk about how not to be a racist to other cultures or different colored skin. They loved it, especially the food. ...Lucas Porter

I think that the first grade class loved what we did. I think that they liked Gabe's preformance the most. One of the kids acted like he was playing the guitar while Gabe was singing. My favorite part of the whole thing was all of the different kinds of food. Mine was the best of course. I made a Spanish dip. Some of the other foods were, rice, pasta, potatoes, salad, and Polish sausage. I think it went well. ...Ben Guerra

What I liked most was the food. I made lasagna. My mom helped me make it. The other thing that I liked is that we had more food for us to have after we were done. The plays were good. We were trying to show them about how paople are different or how people eat other things.. ....Ryan Miller

I liked making food and serving it to the little kids. Also I liked how they actually enjoyed it. I cooked the rice in class for those little kids hoping they would not like it so we could eat it. Gabe's song was really kid. I think the kids liked it the most. ...Zac Gilbert

I had fun doing my project. You might say I had a rocking good time. All the kids enjoyed my remixed songs. That song was rewritten to teach the little kids to not discriminate no matter what. Everyone in my class did a good job. I have never had that much singing exposure in my entire life. I personally think mine was the best. I could tell from the way everyone clapped. Everyone else did good too. Yes, I know I am kind of gloating about it, but I am not gloating too much as if I took all the credit. I am not that kind of person. It was fun just the same. ...Gabe Delgado

On Friday we went to the little kids room. I had fun cooking all the food with my friends. I really enjoyed teaching them about why we shouldn't be prejudice. I think they did learn from it. We gave them food from other cultures, sang a song, and read books about not being prejudice, we also had some skits. ...Skylar Wisniski

In the first grade Shyann, Cheyenne, Eddie, and I read stories to the little kids. I read The Other Side, Shyann read How My Parents Learned to Eat, Cheyenne read The Sneaches and Eddie read Grandfather's Journey. We were trying to teach them that it is not right to judge people by what color their skin is. ...Ashley Schultz

We were trying to teach them about discrimination not being good and neither is racisim. You should like other people for what's on the inside, not what's on the outside. ....Jordon Zupin

I liked being in the first grade classroom because the kids were quiet and didn't shout. And when we were done with our performance (in my case reading) they clapped and that was nice because some people were having a bad day (not me but my friend did) and them clapping and saying "good job" made her feel a lot better. I hope the kids learned a lot about diversity and won't be prejudice when they grow up. ...Shyann S.
