January 6, 2005
Dear Parents,

Today I was not in the classroom. I was notified late about a meeting that I was needed to attend at the ISD. Mr. John Grommons was my substitute. Mr. Grommons has substituted in our district for several years. His son, Reid is in Mr. K’s classroom and his daughter, Anja is in our middle school.

Yesterday we completed our second magazine test. Overall students did very well. I was impressed with their work. I’ll enclose your child’s results in January’s report card.

Next week first grade will begin a new reading unit called "Sharing Time." It includes stories called The Doorbell Rang, The Little Red Hen and Flower Garden. Also poems such as "My Mami Takes Me to the Bakery," "Together" and "Flowers." On the reverse of this sheet are the new vocabulary words for this unit. Please take time to review these words with your child. Over the next few weeks, you will see four books come home: I Like Cats, A Big Help, Great Frogs! and In the Cow’s Backyard. These books will include the new vocabulary words.

The following dates you may want to add to your calendar:
  • January 21 — Teacher In-Service (No School)
  • January 27 — Report Cards Sent Home
  • January 28 — Buddy Reading with Mr. Neph’s Fifth Grade Class
  • February 8 — Good Behavior Ski Day
  • February 18 — Teacher In-Service (No School)
  • February 21 — Winter Break (No School)
