Mrs. Eichberger's First Grade Newsletter November 4, 2004 Parent Teacher Conferences I look forward to discussing your childs progress in first grade. If you have not done so, please schedule an appointment with the elementary office at 889-9674. Conferences take place on: Homework The majority of the students have requested homework! Every Thursday, the children will receive a Math and Language assignment. The language assignment should be completed over the weekend, and brought to school on Monday for review and discussion. It is suggested that your child obtain a bound journal containing DNealian style writing paper used expressly for homework. This style of paper can be purchased at teacher stores and department stores. This journal will be used for homework journaling Math We are identifying coins, their value and value combinations. Students learn best by using real coins. It is suggested that each student bring the following coins:
The coins will be kept in their math tool kits. This money will used to help pay for a year-end field trip. Please have your child bring in these coins ASAP. |
Weekend Language Assignment We are currently studying mammals. Find an animal track (deer or family pet) and write about where you found this track. (size, shape, identification of the animal, etc..) Include a drawn picture or photograph of the animal track. Weekend Math Assignment Purchase an item using nickels and pennies. The item should be less than one dollar. Have your child count out the coins to the salesclerk. Write about what you bought in your journal. Dance Recital Onekama Elementary students will be attending a dance recital at the Ramsdell Theater tomorrow afternoon. What a wonderful opportunity for our students! Assessment Our students took a magazine test this week. This "practice test" assessed skills in word decoding, reading comprehension, and writing skills. I welcome your comments and opinions regarding testing in first grade. Science Center We are in need of objects from nature for our science literacy center. The students will be writing descriptions of all items in the science center. These objects could be feathers, local flora, abandoned hives, interesting rocks and gems. |
