Inauguration Day

Student Tool Box

Your child will be taking home their toolbox over the long weekend. It is suggested that all students keep a well-maintained toolbox containing three sharpened pencils, a set of colored pencils, and one glue stick. Our classroom provides scissors and cap erasers. Please look over the contents of your child’s toolbox and replace necessary items. The toolboxes should be returned on Monday.

No School on Friday, January 21

Our staff will be participating in a school-wide in service tomorrow. The Michigan Department of Education has issued revised grade level expectations. We will be reviewing the revised standards and adapting our curriculums.

Report Cards Next Week

In next Thursday’s folder, your child will be bringing home their 2nd Quarter report card and narrative. Recent work samples will also accompany the report cards. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your child’s progress, please contact me at school. geichberger@manistee.org or 889 — 9674 ext. 438

We will be going to the Crescent Bakery Wednesday, January 26.

Ski Forms DUE ASAP

If you have not done so, please return your child’s ski forms. If your child does not want to participate, please inform the office. Good Behavior Ski Day is February 8 for our class.

Quilt Unit

Our class will begin a study on quilts beginning next week. Quilts are often passed down from one generation to another and the original material often comes from scraps of old clothing and articles around the home. There is a sense of personal heritage and history that is evident in the quilt and comes through when the owner shares them. Quilts provide real world examples of math and geometry concepts. In order to make a quilt you must do a great deal of measuring, planning of the layout (spatial relations), and attention to shapes and patterns.

For homework I am asking that all families provide a scrap of fabric from an old piece of clothing, blanket, or tablecloth, etc… This scrap of fabric should be no less than 12" x 12" as we will incorporate the pieces into 16 small quilted pillows. Each child in our class will take home a quilted pillow containing pieces of fabric from each student. If you are interested in contributing to this project please check the information below and return with your child.

Quilt Project

  • I have a sewing machine to contribute for in-class use with my supervision.
  • I would like to help sew the pieces together in my home.
  • I would like to show the class a quilt from my own personal collection.
  • I would like to donate stuffing and fabric for the back of the pillows.
