Young Writer’s Workshop

This week we began our writers' workshop. Each student will be writing his or her own original story. The school has provided each student with a hardcover blank book. Each student who completes his or her hardcover book will be eligible for the annual Young Writer’s Career Day. With parent permission the selected students will participate in a workshop with a well-known children’s book author or illustrator at the

MISD Career Center on Tuesday March 15.

We began the writing process by pre-writing or brainstorming ideas. We used story maps to help plan our characters, the setting and the plot of the story. Some of the students chose to write about a non-fictional subject, or a special event in their life. Others chose to create a fictional story.

Then we talked about our ideas and drafted out sentences. The students tried to write their words out the best they could. The words could be corrected later.

Next, we revised our stories so that our readers could understand them better. Some us the students were very logical in their story sequence and needed no revisions!

Finally, we did some proofreading and then it was ready for publishing.

The books will be shared at our annual Young Author’s Night on Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30. This will take place in the school’s media center.

Here’s a sneak preview at some of the book titles…

  • My Cat and I
  • The Biggest War

  • My First Two Bikes

Math

We began to cut pieces of our quilted pillows. We will then sort by attributes all the different squares. Each child will be responsible for arranging their quilt pieces. A parent or I will sew the pieces together. This will build their geometry intuition. If you are interested in helping us by sewing the pieces together, we would like to hear from you! We also learning to use the addition/subtraction facts table to solve subtraction problems.
