Mrs. Eichberger's First Grade News Thursday, February 17, 2005
Language

The students were assessed today on reading comprehension and word decoding. The results provide me with additional help when working with your child in guided reading groups.

This week's work going home will include writings about Abraham Lincoln, our Valentine's Day party, and butterflies. Your child should be bringing home at least two writing samples.

Math

We are finishing up our first Math Journals. Basic addition, place value, coin combinations, and greater or less than, equal to, are all concepts that have been practiced daily in class. These concepts will progressively get more advanced. During the last semester we will continue to develop our fact power, work with geometry and attributes, place value and fractions.

Short Week!

There will be no spelling test this week, instead the words for next week will go home today. The children will have more than one week to prepare for the Friday, February 25th test. Your child will have at least five words to practice.

President's Weekend Homework

In the spirit of President's Weekend, it is suggested that your child come to school on Tuesday dressed like a past president. We focused primarily on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and our current President, G.W. Bush. Since we have had no female presidents, I have suggested to the girls that they dress as a future woman president! Certainly any student, boy or girl could dress as a future president. I definitely think that we have some future leaders and revolutionaries in this classroom.

Students could wear whatever they think a president should wear. We discussed that presidents usually looked well-groomed, tailored, and very distinguished. Some students said that presidents usually wear black and most always wear hats. Other students had the idea of dressing like a former first lady. Jackie O. and Eleanor Roosevelt would be nice to have in our classroom on Tuesday!

Researching in picture books and the internet would be helpful in starting this project.
