Yea! It's a Field Trip to a beautiful place: Elberta Farmers Market and Bird Observation Platform
September 23, 2004

Subjects integrated: Economics, Earth, Life Science, Reading, Writing, Money

The purpose of this field trip was to introduce the concept of a farmers market. Students will identify the concepts of need and want, consumer and producer, and services and jobs. The advantage of having fresh locally grown food will also be explained as being a benefit to our environment.

The Elberta Farmers Market was initated by Andrea Burks, our Onekama High School Spanish Teacher.

The second portion of the trip will be spent observing birds at the observation platform located on the Betsie Valley Trail. We read "Marsh Morning" a story about marshland birds and the beautiful sounds they create.

A special thank you to the Farmers Market Community for making us feel welcome! Especially Brown's Honey of Onekama for the honey candy!

Students will have the opportunity to eat fresh foods at the farmers market and ask farmers questions about their farming.

We had a wonderful time exploring the market, sampling the produce and natural products (honey and maple syrup).
