Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week our centers have consisted of Cc books and a word graph, journal and story writing, a number card game and special Halloween counting activities, an animal book to test our learning and a Halloween story with a witches brew graphing activity. Our special person of the week has been Vanessa. Wednesday we enjoyed learning a little about bats, making bats to hang in our room and listening to the lovable story of Stellaluna.

Please look for a homework folder that will be coming home next Thursday. These will have special activities to extend the learning we have done in the classroom. Finished homework should be returned by the following Monday.

Wow! We sure have been busy! Our Halloween party is from 12:15 – 2:30. You are more than welcome to stop by for the festivities. Our classroom volunteers have been working hard to make it a fun-filled afternoon.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween!!

Sincerely,

Miss Schultz

As promised I will give you an update on each academic area. The following is a list of those areas along with a brief description of the things we have covered.

Language - We have focused and become experts on the letters Aa, Cc, Ff, Hh, Ll, Pp, Ss and Tt. We have done a variety of shared reading activities with the words red, yellow, orange, green, blue, black, brown, one, two, three, four, five, is, it, fox, box, fish, dish. As a group we have begun “stretching out” words to determine their spelling as we write. We write and read a morning message on a daily basis. We are becoming readers more and more each day!

Writing - We have become experts at writing the letters listed above in addition to the numbers 0 through 10. The way names are written are becoming much more neat. Any art activity or things we do in addition to our literacy centers require the children to write so that they are getting an abundance of writing experience and practice.

Math – We have learned and practice daily how to count by tens and fives. We count backwards from 20 on a daily basis as well. The children have mastered patterns. We practice number recognition and they are beginning to be able to recognize numbers above thirty. We have learned how tally marks are used. We are beginning to do simple addition and subtraction. We are also beginning to work more regularly with graphs.

Science - We have studied living and nonliving things and the children know everything living things need to survive. We have learned the life cycle of a caterpillar (first hand!!), the life cycle of an apple and the life cycle of a pumpkin. We have studied the way different animals move and their different body coverings. We did a unit on the five senses. The children understand what happens through the four seasons. We did a unit on trees and they know all the parts of a tree.
