Libraries for the Common Good
Duane

Most Americans in the 1730s had limited access to books. Only the rich could afford to have books. Ben Franklin thought that everyone should have the right to read. So in 1731 Franklin and a group called Junto signed the "Articles of Agreement" and started the Library. 50 subscribers invested 40 shillings each while members invested 10. Thanks to all those donations in 1732 the first book order was sent to London. Some books included A Collection of Several Pieces by John Loke. That’s how Ben Franklin let people read books.

Bill Gates also helped Libraries out. He helped libraries get computers for all public use. Also, he donated 20,000,000 to the Seattle Libraries fund to help them and other local libraries get the computers they needed.

As you can see, Ben Franklin invented libraries and Bill Gates donated to them. They helped Americans read freely. Those are the people that helped us read books.

Wouldn’t it be horrible if nobody in the world could use books or go to libraries? Were pretty lucky that two men were willing to give their money to make libraries for the common good.

Andrew Carnegie was a man who gave away his money to schools, colleges, and he made libraries for the common good. Carnegie gave away 90% of his fortune by 1911. Carnegie also gave away $125 million to a foundation called the Carnegie Corporation to aid collages and other schools. In 1902 he founded the Carnegie Institution to fund scientific research and established a pension fund for teachers with $10 million donation.

Benjamin Franklin did the same thing as Carnegie did. On July 1,1731, Franklin and a group of members from the Junto a philosophical association drew up " Articles of Agreement" to form a library. In 1732, the Company’s first book order was sent to London. Many of the earliest books in the libraries collection were either religious or educational tomes. Franklin served in the position of a secretary. By 1770, after the merger with the Union Library Company’s catalogue revealed 20,333 entries. Franklin’s first library was in Philadelphia.

Thanks to Andrew Carnegie and Benjamin Franklin we have so many libraries to go and read books.

Wouldn’t it be terrible if there were no books or libraries in the world? Luckily there were several people that donated some of their money to build libraries or to buy books.

One person that donated money to libraries for the Common Good is Benjamin Franklin. On July 1, 1731 Franklin and a group of members from the Junto, a philosophical association drew up "Articles of agreement to form a library in Philadelphia". Also in 1732 the companies first book order was sent to London. Later even though they had lots of books they could not turn to books to increase their knowledge or settle disputes, as between them they owned few tomes. He is not alive any more but we thank him for donating money to libraries.

Another man that was rich and donated money to libraries was Andrew Carnegie. Andrew Carnegie gave money to towns and cities to build more than 2,000 public libraries. He also gave more than $125 million dollars to a foundation called Carnegie Corporation to aid colleges and other school. When Carnegie was a young man he lived near Colonel James Anderson a rich man who allowed any working boy to use his personal library for free. We hope more of these people will help make libraries in this county soon.

Thanks to these people we now have more libraries in our county.

The three men in these paragraphs started libraries for the common good. They also donated money to other libraries.

Benjamin Franklin began the first library in the United States. Only the very wealthy could afford a book. It cost 50 subscribers and 40 shillings to start a library. Many of the earliest books were religious.

Bill Gates gave computers to libraries so they could get on the Internet. His wife also helped him. They worked together for the common good of the community. The library is for any race, color, or shape. Bill Gates also gave $20,000,000 to the Seattle library.

They both did something for the common good.

Ben Franklin and Andrew Carnegie helped us have libraries we have today.

In the 1730’s most Americans did not have books around them to read. On July 1, 1731, Benjamin Franklin and a group of member for the Junto drew up" Articles of Agreement" to form the first library in the U.S. There were 50 people who gave forty shillings to start the library. People also donated books and other artifices. As the library grew in size, they had to move in bigger buildings. This Library Company, was one of Franklin greater achievement.

Andrew Carnegie started out poor but became a very successful businessman. He retired in 1901 at the age of 66 as the word’s richest men. He then became a philanthropist and his Carnegie Institution founded, many libraries, and the Hague Pales of Peace. By 1911 he gave 90 percent of his money away. Being a Philanthropist meant more to him then money.

Ben Franklin and Andrew Carnegie gave up their time and money to build libraries.

Two men named Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates gave money for libraries to be established, and Bill Gates provided computers for people to use them freely.

Andrew Carnegie was born on November 25,1835,and died on August 11,1919. He grew up to be a very wealthy person and gave money for libraries to be established. He gave money to towns and cities to build more than 2,000 public libraries. He also gave $ 125 million to a foundation called the Carnegie Corporation to aid colleges and other schools. Carnegie also believed in the world of peace. By 1911 Carnegie had given away 90% of his fortune.

As computer use has exploded across the country, there remains a troubling gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not; a gap known as the " Digital Divide." It is important that no matter what race, religion, gender, income age can use technology Bill Gates was very intelligent to do that.

Bill Gates and Andrew Carnegie played a big role in the history of libraries. I am happy they did that.

Quote from a slave named Pink "When I learned to read I knew no one could own me". When he said this he meant that when he reads books he feels UN-owned.

Andrew Carnegie was a very wealthy man. He was one of the wealthiest people alive. He could have made himself richer, but instead he became a philanthropist. He had used the majority of his money to build libraries all across the nation. He had made so many libraries the count was 200,000.Andrew seemed like a nice man. There is a library in Manistee, Michigan that is still standing.

Bill Gates also helped with the libraries. He had put a computer in every public library in the United States. So everyone could use a computer not just the rich people. Then they came up with the Internet, and he made it so people could use the Internet.

We should all be very thankful that Andrew Carnegie, and Bill Gates contributed to our libraries.

In the 1730’s books were rare and expensive. I’m very glad people like Ben Franklin and Bill Gates helped libraries.

On July 1,1731 a group of members from the Junto formed the Articles of Agreement to build a library. In 1732 the first order was sent to London. Some of the books were A Collection of Several Pieces by John Locke and Plutarches Morals. The first librarian was Louis Timothee. Peter Collinson bought the libraries books. In the 1740’s libraries formed across the country. In 1773 a new library was built because they ran out of space. In 1787 the Library Company offered delegate to the Constitutional Convetion use of the library.

Bill Gates is another person that helps libraries. Also the U.S. Library Program donated Microsoft software as a grant to almost 11,000 libraries in the U.S. In addition he donated 20million dollars to the Seattle Library Foundation. The Libraries for All was aimed to expand libraries through the neighborhood and to expand the book collections. I am very glad Bill Gates helped libraries across the country.

Both these people helped libraries across the country. I am very glad we had people like these to help our country.

Bill Gates and Ben Franklin are two great inventors and philanthropists. They both were very rich men and Bill still lives today.

Ben Franklin was born in 1706. At that time books were very expensive and Ben wanted to change that. When he grew up he started the first library and he called it Library Company. Hi s library rented out books for very little money so poor people could read them. The library got most books from donations and soon people started donating telescopes and microscopes. Then the library turned into a museum and a library. In 1770 the Library Company merged with the Union Library. Ben died on April 17, 1790.

Bill Gates is also a Philanthropist. He gave many computers to libraries so middle class and poor people could use also them. Bill Gates is best known as the co-founder of Microsoft and the richest man in the world. You could say that Bill "bridged" the "digital divide" because he made it so poor people could use computers. Bill is still alive today and is still rich.

Bill Gates and Ben Franklin are only two great philanthropists but they are two of the greatest. They both have one thing in common though, they both helped make libraries better.
