I have been thinking about moving west because the land
and crops are good. Our farming here is not working
anymore. I am going with my sister. My sister has two
kids. There dad is not going. There is not enough room.
She wants to go because of the gold. I am going because
of the land. I heard it is really nice out there. Land
and grass all green and rodes of gold. It is also great
soil for crops. When I go there I hope all of it is
really true. I hope to be happy. We must pack dried food
and only take small things like dolls and some clothes I
told my sisters kids. I am so happy to go with my sister.
We could be a better family though it is hard to leave my
home in town. I hope to make friends along the way. ….Brooke

moving west. I want to mostly explore because I'm already
19 and I have never been out of town. I also want to go
for free land because I can't afford any. I'm hoping to
find a wife on the way there so we can settle down. I'm

heard all about the great farming and plenty of trees for
a cabin. I might become a fisherman there and start a

I am now 21. My husband is
in Oregon building a log cabin for us to live in. It's
hard to face the fact that were being forced off our
land. I'm back at home packing our stuff for the long
journey. We will soon be parents of twins. We were
married July 19, 1839. Tomorrow we will leave. It will
take about six months to get there. I will miss my
family.
This morning the weirdest thing happened. I woke up and

my 20th birthday. I just suffered labor for
two days for my new born baby boy Andrew. My husband left
two weeks ago on the Oregon trail to build a house in
California for us and our new baby to live it. I'm
leaving with my father. My father is going with me
because my brother Nick is helping Sean, my husband,
build our cabbin. Another reason we are going is because
of slavery. I've just had enough of it. And I heard there
is free land and gold in California where our cabbin is
