Cooking on the Oregon Trail

Yesterday we had buffalo to eat. I ate only a little because 50 people had to eat it. The buffalo had been salted and then cooked right away because we had to keep going. Also Karie and I had found some very good tasting blackberries that we ate. We also had some sun dried sunflower seeds that we ate as a side dish.

Before we started cooking the buffalo we gathered buffalo chips so we could start the fire. Karie and I found only a couple handfuls of chips but ma said that was fine. We also cooked some soup out of berries, carrots, and beans. Ma said it was really good for you but when I tried it I felt like hurling. After supper we washed our faces and we went to sleep.

Today pa and I went hunting. We got a bear, moose, and an elk. We carried 400 pounds back with the help of our wagon party. Ma is making bear stew. My older brother stumbled upon some carrots, potatoes, and celery. Ma added cornmeal, salt, pepper, and beans.

The dinner was great. We ate till we were full. The only problem was that ma cut open her hand. We added a bandage and let it heal. After dinner we gave 20 pounds of meat to each wagon we saw. Oops. Ma says I have to go to bed now. Bye!

My dad and my brother went hunting they shot a few squirrels and some deer when they got back to the house we had squirrels, deer, corn, beans for supper. I saw Shane picking flower with Tim over by the house. I thought that was pretty funny.

Finding Food is Not Easy

Finding something to eat on the Oregon trail is hard work. You have to go hunting all the time for food. I some times shoot as much as I need and sometimes shoot more. It is hard work but it is better than nothing I all ways say. We use iron type pots to cook our food. I also have to pick plants to eat too. That’s what it is like to eat on the Oregon Trail.

Today I had to go and hunt for buffalo chips because we ran out last night. The girls had gone gathering for berries, roots, leaves, and stuff like that. I got quite a bit of buffalo chips, like 7 or 8.

I can’t wait until dinner tonight. We are having a 210 pound Elk! This will be the 2nd time we have had elk sense we left home. I shot the elk. In trade we are giving 100 pound of elk for 105 pound of fish from the people a couple of wagons in front of us.

Today I had to look for fruit I met two people named Maeve L. and then we became friends we had to gather buffalo chips. I hate doing that. It is hard work but it has to be done.

That night after dinner we got to play a game and then we got to dance to the fiddle. I had lots of fun. Tomorrow will probably be the same way. We had bacon again and deer. But tomorrow we will have turkey.

Today my brother and I went hunting. We got a buffalo, suprisingly. Together we couldn’t carry it back so we went and got one of our strongest horses to pull it back. While we were doing that Ma was baking a loaf of bread. Pa was making a rope fence for our horses so they could run around. Mary and Myra, my other 2 sisters were hunting for roots or petals of plants, and luckily found a berry patch.

That night we had bread and butter with some beef stew and for desert we had blackberries. That night everyone was very full and we had a lot of leftovers. I had 2 bowls with one slice of bread. The berries were extremely good. I love going out and collecting meat and gathering herbs for our dinner.

Yesterday Ma made me go gather roots, berries, flowers, and leaves. After I brought all the things back Ma was cooking over the fire with a kettle and a ladle. I asked where Pa was, but she didn’t know. Then Braden came running to me and he said Pa went hunting with some other people.

Later Pa came back with two ducks, two turkeys, and one buffalo he said he had a lucky shot on. He also said he almost shot a pretty big bear but missed by a little bit. Today Pa said one ox died, but he thinks we have enough to last the rest of the trail.

Today I had to go get some buffalo chips for the fire back at camp. I brought back 8 buffalo chips. Mom said that was enough for the fire. My dad had the hunt and he got 2 deer. Mom said that we would share with other wagons that are on the trail.

My mom cooked the deer really good, but she burnt her hand when she was cooking. For dessert my mom went picking for some berries and she got some. After dinner I said, "good dinner mom had" and I went to bed.

We have been on the trail for 2 months. We started out with a variety of things to eat, but now we are almost out of all of the initial resources we started the trail with. We went hunting once and got a buffalo. We found a lot of buffalo chips too. So, we built a fire from the chips and ate some buffalo.

Now we need too gather berries and vegetables. We need to do so because a diet with just meat is very plain. I personally think that we need all of the vegetables and fruits we can find. But up until now the fruits and vegetables have been scarce. The food that we have is very good though.

We’ve been on the trail for 2 months now and wen still hasn’t made it to Oregon. Along the trail we have brought dried fruits and vegetables, corn meal, flour, bacon (salted or dried). For animals we have milk cow, cattle, oxens, and chicken. We gathered roots, berries, and leaves.

Yesterday we had to stop because grandma said "She had to cook supper for the night and we were getting tired." The next day we started on the trail. Papa said, "We were going to stop and hunt and grandma, Nisha, and I are going to go see if we can find anything like more berries. I can’t wait ‘til we get to Oregon. People say that Oregon is a beautiful place.

Today Alan and I had to go find buffalo chips. We found about 9 for the fire. Alan brought the gun along and he shot a pretty big deer. Carrying the deer back was hard but it was worth it. I couldn’t wait to eat it.

When we got back to the wagon Cameron and Ryan were getting milk from our cow. Alan and I started the fire and cut off a piece of the deer. We put the meat in our pot with some wild onions we had found about a week earlier. Alan added some flour and pepper. The meal tasted great and we had leftovers so we gave them to the wagon behind us. They looked hungry because they had lost their gun and couldn’t go hunting.

Getting food is be sort of hard because the animals on the trail you see would run away. Getting plants would have to know witch plants are poisonous and witch is not.

Preparing food sometimes can be hard. It can be hard by some times you may not have the right stuff. Some times you may not have anything to eat at all.

Yesterday my brothers went hunting. Joe got two elk. Jeremy got a bear. Mom and I went in the woods and got some roots and found seeds. We also fund some fruit.

Today mom and I are going in the forest near by to get some fruit and vegetibals. My dad Steve also hunts with my brothers. My brothers are both 20 years old. We brought some animals too so we don’t run out of food. We brought 2 chickens, 1 milk cow and some sunflower seeds.

Today all of us had to go outside and get buffalo chips. It was a very hot out and we had long sleeves on. Today we got about 39 buffalo chips. My sister had to go back to the wagon because she had a fever. We needed about 50 buffalo chips. We had a lot of trouble because we were not the only ones out here. In about 3 hours later we got back with all the buffalo chips. That was that was not all because we had to gather some dry grass to start a fire. We also had to get bushes if we run out of dry grass. After that we were done. That was a lot of work we told each other.

Now had to go hunting and my sister had to go cause she was the best at hunting. We had to be very careful not to get killed by a bear. We shot a bear, 2 moose, 3 bird, 4 deer, and that is all. We shot about 6,000 pounds and we already have 7,000 and we can’t eat that much. Than we thought we could share it with others. So we shared about 4,000 and kept the rest.

It is almost night and we have to go gather plants to eat and cook. We found wild berries, apples, sunflowers, and flowers. We cooked some of are plants and dried our fruit. Now we have to dry food a little bit make a little bit of stew. Now we are done for the day.

Making Dinner on the Oregon Trail
Ashley

In my wagon I brought many things. It was hard to cook all the food we’ve been hunting for. We’ve been gathering a lot of berries, roots, and leaves. Tonight we had dried bacon. We put the bacon in the kettle, then we put the kettle over the fire. I've been having an appetizing dinner.

When I went hunting today I shot a bear, but it wouldn’t die. Finally it died. My friends Brooke, and Malana are helping me cook. Today I went out, and gathered buffalo chips. We had a blast.

Today I went hunting. I shot a 500-pound buffalo and a 200-pound deer. Were going to have a lot of food tonight. They were very heavy, the buffalo the heaviest. I hope my younger brother found some buffalo chips to cook them with.

Dinner is cooking right now. It smells really good. We also have some vegetables to go with it. Were sharing the food with three other wagons. I hope we eat it all otherwise the wagons gonna stink. After this were going to dance all night. This has to be the best night on the trail so far.
