Language

Our stories this week had the theme of country life and city life. We read "Going to Town" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The story is set in "olden times" when people used "horses and carriages" to get around instead of cars. We also read the fable, "Town Mouse, Country Mouse" with the moral it is better to live simply in peace than to live extravagantly in fear. "City Book" was a story about a boy who enjoys his life in New York City and all it has to offer. We wrote about our favorite characters and favorite parts from the stories. We also constructed our own cities using recycled boxes. Finally, we discussed how life differed from the city than the country. We sang a song about Mr. Nitty and Farmer Johnson.

Math

This week we have been introduced to nickels and practicing exchanging pennies for nickels. We also practiced finding the values of various combinations of nickels and pennies. Please see the attached HOME LINK for math. It should be returned tomorrow, Friday, November 7. The school store note above will not apply for a couple more weeks. I will be sending home specific information about our classroom store at a later time.

Assessment

We took our first reading and math tests this week. Our reading test covered word decoding and phonics. Our math test covered tallies and numbers that are greater or less than. Much to my surprise the students enjoyed taking the tests. They wanted to take another one! The results will be discussed with parents during our parent teacher conferences on November 18. By the way, please make sure you sign up for a time to see me on that day between 3:00 and 8:00 pm.

Arts

We painted scenes of canoes on the river. They are displayed in our "Panda Bear Art Gallery." We will begin weaving soon. Our classroom will need pieces of clean burlap as well as different colors and textures of yarn. They may be dropped off anytime.
