First Grade Halloween Ball

Our Halloween Ball begins tomorrow afternoon at 12:15. During the afternoon, we will dance and sing Halloween songs, participate in the school parade, play Halloween games, and feast! Please make sure your child brings their costume to school in a bag. They will be able to change into their costume after lunch. Also, it would be best to leave all items at home that resemble weapons. Our classroom does not encourage violence. All parents and younger siblings of students are invited to the event. If you can't make it, there will be pictures posted on the web the next week. Thank you to all parents who supplied items for our celebration!

We are still in need of the following items:

Apples (for apple math - all varieties)

Visitor from Tanzania

Grace Mokiwa from Tanzania, Africa came to visit our school. She shared with the students what it was like to teach and learn in a Tanzanian school. The students sang two African songs that they learned in class, the Nigerian Boat Song and Prayer for Africa. On that day, we read a book called Masai and I, a story about the differences between a Masai village girl and a girl who lived in an American city.

Please read the enclosed sheet from Mr. Hughes regarding parent-teacher conferences. They will take place Thursday, November 18 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM. Students will be dismissed from school at 12:30 PM on that day. Please call Mary Bergren in the elementary office to schedule a conference time at 889- 9674.

Math

This week we did Pumpkin Math. We divided our class into three groups and each group was given a pumpkin. We were then asked to estimate the amount of pumpkin seeds that were in our pumpkin. Estimate means to “take a good guess.” Then Mrs. Eichberger opened up our pumpkins and we scooped out the seed and counted them. One student came with just a few seeds of guessing the correct amount in his pumpkin! All week we did counting activities with our pumpkin seeds. We divided them up into groups of 10 and then figured out how many groups of 10 made 100. So now we know what 100 looks like.

Language

Our story of the week was “My River.” We all need rivers to live, children, animals and plants! We need the river for life! Everyone needs the river! We listed animals that live in and around rivers, wrote about our rivers, and were shown a demonstration on our rivers flow.

We created a book about our field trip to “Food for Thought.” Our book will be kept in our classroom for all to share. We also wrote our own text to go along with pictures at our web site. Please take a look at www.onekama.k12.mi.us <http://www.onekama.k12.mi.us> and go to Mrs. Eichberger, then “Our trip.”

Arts

We weaved placemats for our Halloween Ball. They turned out beautifully! We also have been singing many Halloween and harvest-themed songs.
