Student’s Work

As mentioned in the last newsletter, students’ weekly work will come home in their Thursday Folder.  Please look over your child’s work with them.

Language

Our story of the week was When this Box is Full.  A story about a boy who collects items from nature or things that he made for each month of the year.

Students identified and sequenced the months of the year as well as the Four Seasons.  We also read the book, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstien, and On the Day You Were Born by Debra Fraiser. We then wrote about our “favorite part” of the story.

Science

We read the story, The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. We  watched Mrs. Eichberger cut  a gourd  and a butternut squash.  Then we examined the differences between the seeds, separated the pulp and spread them to dry.  We also went on a nature walk to look for signs of fall - fallen acorns, colored leaves, etc…

  Emergency Snack Bank

As I mentioned in the first newsletter, we are in need of snacks for our emergency snack bank. If you wish to contribute your generosity will be greatly appreciated. Suggested items are bulk-packaged granola bars, apples, animal crackers and dried fruit. At the moment our cupboards are bare for we have nothing to share!

Math

We have been practicing counting up and back on the number line and number grid. We have also been exploring complements of 10 by using pennies. This has been helping us to reinforce the idea that each number is a count of real objects.

We will begin to use more coins in our math studies.  It is important to use real money when learning about money. Please send in the following coins in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name.

  • 2 Quarters

  • 10 Dimes

  • 5 Nickels

  • 20 Pennies.

These coins will stay in your child’s tool kit for the remainder of the year.  At the end of the year, we will use the money to buy an ice cream cone at the Boat Launch on Main St.

Person of the Day

Every day a student is chosen to the “Person of the Day.”  The student is responsible for many duties such as being the line leader, paper passer, and messenger.  This person is also responsible for watering the plants and keeping our library neat and tidy.  At the end of the day, the entire class is responsible for cleaning up.  The person of the day selects a helper and they wash the desks.
