Language

This week’s story was There’s An Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer. A boy resolves to get rid of an alligator living under his bed. Students analyzed the important events and parts in the story. We then transitioned into the writing process and began the first steps in writing our own books. The Young Author’s Project is designed to give students a chance to write, edit, design, and illustrate a book. One child from each classroom will be chosen to attend a workshop with Tom Woodruff, children’s book illustrator and artist, on March 22, 2004. All students in our class will read their book to their parents for the spring parent/teacher conference.

We have been writing and identifying naming and actions words from our stories, and new this week… compound words. We were compound word detectives by playing charades and acting out each compound word.

Math

We have been working on our addition facts. Activities include making up and solving number stories, using the number line to find differences, adding using different units such as money, pounds, and candy.
