Mrs. Eichberger’s First Grade Newsletter

Language

Our stories this week were, With my Brother. We began the “writing process” this week by writing about a special person in our lives. The writing process consists of five steps.

1. Prewriting (brainstorming ideas)

2. Drafting (what do we want to say)

3. Revising (what do we want to add or take out)

4. Proofreading (Correct grammar and spelling)

5. Publish and Share

We also read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt to go along with our quilt project. We began to cut out the pieces today with Mrs. Barnard.

Social Studies - Careers

Mrs. Barnard came into our classroom to talk about her job. She is a seamstress. We found out that she makes costumes for television commercials. We enjoyed her visit very much!

Math

We were introduced to the greater, less and equal to symbols. <,>,=. We practiced using the symbols in our work. We also explored counting units and finding area by covering a surface with a unit. We estimated the area of the surface, covered it, and then counted the units to check our estimates.

Spelling

Your child brings home five spelling words every Thursday night. These words are taken from your child’s writing and our weekly word wall words. Please practice them with you child.

Staying Healthy

WASH YOUR HANDS! The students hear those words everyday. Proper hygiene is essential for good health. Hand washing, drinking plenty of water, and eating healthy are good ways to prevent sickness. We have been talking about healthy habits all year. Please reinforce these habits at home. It will help to make for a healthier classroom environment.
