Measuring the Trees

The first thing we did was listen to Ms. Travis's directions. She told us all the things we had to do. Then we got in groups. Then she gave us all the things we needed to measure the trees and to get the soil. Then we were getting ready to go outside to work. ...Christian

What we did at Chittenden

Today my class and I went to Chittenden. When we got there Ms.Travis told us the rules. One of them was if she said, "heads up", we would have to listen or she would blow her whistle

We studied the soil with with augers. An auger is a tool that you put into the ground, turn it, then you take it out and you have your soil sample. There is an A soil and a B soil. The A soil is what we sometimes call top soil. It is darker then the B soil because it has more carbon. It also has lots of organic stuff in it. The B soil is made up of iron oxide. It is a kind of yellowish color.

Then Jon, Jake and I did ten tree measurements .We each got a turn too measure at least three trees. All the trees were Ponderosa Pine. We got done very fast.

The last thing the class did was experiments. I was with Jon and Jake. We did the lime experiment. We put sand in a test tube. Then put chemicals in the test tube shut the lid then shook it. We made a filter. Finally we put the filter on anther test tube and the liquid came out dark green.

I had a great time at Chittenden. After we were done we drove back to school. Finally I went home to think about how much I loved the day.

Yesterday the fith grade field trip to Chittenden Nursery.

When we got there they told us how to use the tools. Then we were off to go get dirt samples. There was a tool called an auger that picsk up dirt from the ground. It took are group about five try’s until we reached the B layer. And then we took samples for are Experiments.

Then we sifted over to measuring trees. Everybody had to measure ten trees. The people in my group are Thomas, Bill and Meme. Are tallest tree was about One hunderd fifty. In a tree there is a leader they look like little balls type things, And if that dies the next tallest leader will be in charge.

Then we had lunch I had a peanut butter and jeley sandwitch . Then we played volley ball. We won at the nick of time eight- seven. We won at the nick of time because they just said it was time to go in, when we won.

Then we did so experiments with the dirt that we dug up. We used chemicals like Potash.

I had a good time learning at Chittenden.

On Tuesday we went to the Chittenden Nursery. We had a long bus ride there. We were told what to do when we got there. Then we got right to work.

The fist thing my group did was auger. An auger is a soil-sampling tool. We dug in the soil first. Then we measured how much B and A layer there is of soil we had. The A layer is the darker and the layer with more carbon andnutrients. The B layer is the layer where the nutrients and the carbon are almost all dropped. And any iron is turned to rust. Any way next we were off to measuring.

The next thing we did was tree measuring. Each group was assigned 10 trees. All except one tree were over a hundred centimeters. We used a yardstick and a clipboard to record are results. After measuring we went in for lunch.

After lunch we did chemistry. My group did the Nitrogen and Phosphorus tests. We worked with eyedroppers, funnels, test tubes and the chemicals. We had fun mixing them. Then we left.

I thought it would be boring, but it was cool. We had along bus ride back and even that was fun.

Yesterday my class and I went to Chittenden Nursery. We left at 8:00. We got there at 9:10. When we got there some people named pat and Dave where waiting for us. They where going to be our turer guides for the day. They told us what to do for the time we where there.

Pat and Dave showed us the tools we had to use for what we where going to do. We used a tool called an auger to dig the soil samples. And we used a measuring stick to measure the trees. We measured the trees that some other kids planted a few years ago. We measured 10 trees. There where a couple that where as tall as the kids in my group. And others where smaller than us. After that we traded places with the other part of the group. Then we got to take soil samples.

When we got done we headed bake to the building we did 3 experiments. The first thing we do is nitrogen fugal. We put a coffee funnel in to the funnel. Than we put the nitrogen in the funnel it turned purple blue. The second experiment we did was we put another funnel into the container. It turned green blue. And the last experiment we did was we mixed the soil that we got and mixed it with the other kind of chemical. It turned yellow. Then we got ready to go home. When we got to the school we wrote about our trip.

On November 5th we went to Chittenden Nursery. I learned that there are two layers of soil. Layer A and layer B.

Is what we did is we took tools out to the field. We took the tools and measured the trees with a meter stick. Then we put our measurement down on a piece of paper.

Then we took the auger to get the A and B soil. Then we put the A soil into one cup and the B soil into another cup. Next we went to the building and had lunch and recess.

Next we tested our A and B soil. Some groups got A soil and some groups got B soil. My group was Elizabeth, Karl and Jordan. Our group got A soil. Then we took test tubes and put A soil into it. Then we took the eyedropper and put in Nitrogen 1 and 2. Then we shook it up.

We got these little booklets and we had to match the color of our concoction to the colors in the book. Then we had to find our %. Ours was 2%.

Then we did another experiment with different chemicals. This time we used the chemical Potash. First we put In Potash 4 and 5. Then we mixed it all up and put it in the filter. Then when it filtered the color was clear so we had to stir it with a wire to give it its color.

Next we matched the color to the color in the book. Then their % was 4%. It was kind of hard mixing all those chemicals together and not getting any on your hands. That is what happened at Chittenden Nursery.

Today we went to Chittenden’s Nursery. We learned about chemicals, soil, and trees.

There are two layers of soil. One is the darker and higher. It is called the A layer. The other part is lower and lighter in color. It is called layer B.

We collected info about the height of trees. The info about trees was basically just how high they are and what kind of tree they were. We worked with Ponderosa Pines and a lot of the trees were over one meter/100 cm.

First we looked at the number tag to figure out what tree it was. Second we put the meter stick up to the highest part of the tree and measured it. Finally we wrote how tall it was down on the paper. That was fun but sampling the soil was more fun.

First we cleared a spot with our foot. Then we spun it around as we put pressure on it. Finally we pulled it out and looked at the soil. We saw the A and B layer. The A layer is darker because it has a lot of carbon in it. The B layer is lighter because it has iron oxide that is rust and layer B is the color of rust.

After we talked about the A and B layer of soil we did an experiment. First we took some soil and added some Nitrogen 1and 2. Then we took funnel paper and put it in a funnel an put the funnel in a test tube. Finally we added the soil with the nitrogen and looked to see what color it changed.

I had fun at Chittenden’s Nursery. I hope we go again.

On Tuesday we went to Chittenden Nrusry. We had lots of fun. Even tough it was really cold. We measured trees and took soil samples. We also did a little bit of chemistry.

First I measured the trees. You would try to find the tallest part of the tree. If it were dead you wouldn’t count it. You also had a sheet to fill out. You had to put down the row, size, and tree number. Each group had ten trees to measure. We all measured the Ponderosa Pine.

After that we tested soil. I learned that layer A is darker that layer B. To find this out we used an auger. You put it in the ground and you pushed and twisted it until you think you found the B soil. You also had to take samples of layer A and layer B.

Then we went back inside to do some chemistry. Each group had two experiments. My group had the nitrogen and pH experiment. The other groups had the lime and potash test. We got a book with colors in it and we had to match ours with the book. My group was Katherine, Ashley, and Sherece.

It turned out really fun. That’s what we did at Chittenden Nursery.
