Our Brownie Troop is at Home in the Kitchen

The second grade Brownies, chose to study France, in preparation for their International days, to be held on Sunday February 23, in the
Onekama gym, and prepared ordinary foods from France.

Mrs. Hrachovina offered to sponsor the use of the Arcadia gym and kitchen to prepare the foods, on the day before the big event. The Brownies and their leaders made apple tarts with a sweet pastry dough, cream puffs, madeleines, and crepes sauce mornay (Medium whitesauce with Swiss cheese melted in).

The girls had fun. Mrs. Barnard had organized the costume department, with theatrical resemblance of French peasant costumes.

They learned a new song “Savez-vous planter les choux” and worked on “Allouette”, which they remembered well from their Kindergarten days (It is a Canadian song, and I told them that, but it was the choice of their leaders).

Mrs. Hrachovina provided the recipes and brought in the utensils necessary for the preparation of the food. Brownies were able to use measurements in grams or/and in standard American cups and measures, depending upon their recipe.

The girls also listen to “Bonjour Mr. Satie”. By Tomie De Paola in library, which treats on the Picasso/Matisse influence. They also heard Beauty and the Beast, and discovered that there are at least 63 different versions in France alone, and over 40 versions in North America, which taught us a little about the oral tradition and the writing of story retold, and we talked about the different versions we had heard and how they different they were from that of Virginia Haviland. (Mine was anyway!)

Thank you for the text, Mrs. Hrachovina
