Overlanders write in their Oregon Trail Journals daily.
(except when they fall asleep over the campfire.)

Dear Journal,
Today on the Oregon Trail, we went hunting. My little brother was shooting at a bear and it got made. It started to charge at my Mom. Then it stopped in its tracks and saw that I was eating some hardened maple sugar. Then it pounced on me and scratched me. Finally my little brother shot it in the head and killed it. I was left with my scratches and no more maple sugar. But I was not seriously injured.

Dear Diary,
Because I was the oldest one, I had to cook the food, and I also had to build the fire. I really liked cooking the food for all my family. The only part that I hated about cooking is that I had to open all the animals to get them ready to cook. The animals that I needed to open were the buffalo and the chicken.

Dear Journal,
My first pistol was bought for me by my big brother. It was cool for him but the bad thing about it was the guy he bought it from had no more bullets for my gun in the store. I still was happy. I really love him for it. He promised that he would buy me some bullets on the way, but I told him I would buy them myself.

Dear Journal,
Today we got a lot of food but we had to hunt a lot of deer. I went fishing a hundred times. I usually got 1 to four fish. We always look for food so we don't get scurvy. We will make it to Oregon no matter what the cost.

Note: Overlanders dress for the trip. At the end of each day's travels, they neatly fold and stack their clothing in the wagon bed to be ready for the next day's journey.

Dear Journal,
When I went fishing I caught an 11.3 lb bass. I shared it with my family. I was really happy when I caught the fish. That was the first fish I have caught in my whole life. I helped my uncle cut open the fish. It was not a pretty sight, but I had to do it. It was good to eat. My twin sister liked it even better than me.

Dear Diary,
Today we were hunting and we were shooting at an elk. Before he was dead he charged at us, and he bit Abby. Abby got better though. Another time Billy Bob Joe was hunting . He was trying to get a bear. He missed the bear like 5 times. The bear must have got mad because he started attacking Jeff, another guy who is in our wagon.

Dear Journal,
Today my little doggy died. Me and Little Jonie were so sad we cried all day. We had to bury him in the ground by a tree. I think he got too cold when we were sleeping, because when we woke up he was laying by the oxen dead. I was the first to see him because I woke up first. When I saw him I came running in the wagon to work up Mommy and Little Jone=ie when they saw Jack they were really sad too. I went to go pick flowers to put around where he was buried. We put rocks around it.

Dear Journal,
When we first started on the Oregon Trail Uncle Hearby told us to collect as much wood as we can because we wouldn't be able to find wood on the prarie. When we thought we had enough wood we headed out for the wide open prarie. After traveling for about two weeks we ran out of wood and we started to use anything to help our fire burn. Finally we made it to a woodsy area and we collected enough wood to last us until the end of our journed on the Oregon Trail.
