When I am Safty Patrol I have to look out for all the kids. I'm safety patrol in the morning so I have to get there early enough to stop the kids from getting in the way of the buses. I'm crosswalk so I have to make sure that I stop the kids from running out in front of the buses. There are a lot of different positions for safety patrollers. …By Chad

Safety patrol is something only fifth graders can do. I was at the pencil last week. (The pencil is a position where you stand.) When you are at the pencil you have to take the little kids to Castle and Kites or else they might get lost. I like the top of the steps. You are suppose to make sure cars hit no one. Safety patrol is cool because you get to get out of school early.

Safety Patrol is very neat. We have to go to meetings, do our jobs, and train new members of Safety Patrol at the beginning of the year. Later we say an oath later in the year.

Every year in 5th grade new people join S.P. We go outside and demonstrate our positions for them. So they can get the idea of what to do.

Every Friday we have a Safety Patrol meeting. What we do is we see who takes a break and positions. There are two groups A.M. and P.M. There are several jobs. For example there's the back of the buses. You make sure kids get to their bus and not run into the road.

Later in September we swear an oath. A policeman comes in and tells us the oath and we repeat after him. It is an easy oath. It is a very short oath. But it is a good one.

Later at the end of the year we go to MI Adventures. My favorite ride is the Corkscrew. You go upside down really fast. That is going to be fun. I can’t wait till the end of the year.

A Safety Patroller has lots of different jobs. The back of the bus stop the people from running around when the buses come in so no one gets hurt. Crossing guards stop people from crossing were people get picked up when buses come. The front of the bus stops the people when the buses leave. The top person tells the crossing guards when the buses are coming and the crossing guards tell the back of the bus. The person waits at the pencil for the kids that go to castles and kites and takes them there. Those are the different jobs of the safety patrollers. ….By Brenna

I am in Safety Patrol this year. We have a lot of jobs to do. The jobs in the morning are crosswalk, top, 3rd grade shuttle, and 2nd grade shuttle. The jobs in the afternoon are top, crosswalk, back of the bus, front of the bus, and pencil. In the afternoon we have to get out there at 2:50 but in the morning we come at 7:40.

We have to wear an orange belt so people can recognize us. This belt is very important because if we get out there and we don’t have a belt on people will just think were just standing out there for no reason.

When we are about 2 weeks into our work we have to swear in. That means we have to swear that we will do our jobs right and be there every day. It’s like swearing over the holy bible. The good thing about Safety Patrol is at the end we get to go to Michigan Adventures. I really like it. …by Lucie

Safety Patrol is Awesome!
By Anna

There are two shifts. They are AM and PM. For AM there is 4 jobs. The jobs are crossing guard, 3rd grade, 2nd grade and top. For crossing guard you need two people. Those two people stand at the bottom of the stairs and when a bus is coming they put their arms straight out so the kids that are walking down the steps stop. I’m on crossing guard right now. The next job is top. One person goes on top of the stairs and if they see a bus before the people at the bottom they tell them. They also make sure people cross the road OK. The 3rd job is 2nd grade. For 2nd grade a person goes under the clock in front of the 2nd grade line. When the 2nd grade bus gets there the person leads them to their bus. The other job is 3rd grade. It is exactly like 2nd grade accept the 3rd grade lines up under the flag, unless it’s raining. I’m on the AM shift.

The PM has five jobs. The jobs are pencil, front bus, back bus, top and crossing guard. For the pencil one person stands by the pencil and then takes the kids to castles and kites. The front bus is when one person stands at the top of the bus-loading zone and watches the kids getting on the bus and the kids going in front of the bus. For the crossing guard two people stand at the other end of the cross walk (the side near the school). Crossing guards watch the people who are crossing and hold up their hands when the busses are going. For the back bus one person stands at the back end of the bus-loading zone. They watch the people getting on the busses. The last one is top. For top one person stands at the top of the steps and watches the people that cross the road. For saftey patrol you either have to go to school early or stay late, but it’s worth it.

My Job
by Luke

Being a safety patroller has changed my life in many ways. Most importantly, being responsible.

I have a responsibility to protect other students. This involves making sure they always walk and they stop when the buses are moving. I look out for dangers and make sure children look both ways before crossing the road.

I have learned to participate in school activities. One of my favorite is being a peace-maker. This is where I help the younger kids get their hot lunches, go to gym class, and do any other things they might need.

Lastly, I have helped out in the food pantry in our community. I believe my participation in this program has helped many people and this makes me feel good about myself. I enjoy feeling good about myself and being a safety patroller makes me feel like that.

During this year, 2001-2002, I am proud to be a safety patroller. Safety Patrol is a fun job to do. It can be a lot of fun, but we also have to work. I think every safety patroller should be responsible, respectful, and hard working. Safety Patrol is helping me learn these things.

Safety Patrol has helped me become a better leader because it shows me that w have to be on task. I used to have a hard time paying attention. sometimes I would just sit and watch. We also have responsibility in safety patrol. We can't just stand there with our belts on and talk.

I'm usually put on crosswalk or I stop people from crossing the street when a bus in coming. There are a lot of positions, but hat is my favorite. I really like safety patrol, and it is a lot of fun.
