My class worked to be philanthropists by bringing in books and then selling them. We earned $65.41 to donate to the Onekama Library.

Andrew Carnegie provided for a lot of libraries. In fact one of them still exists today in Manistee, Michigan. Mr. Carnegie donated $35,000 dollars for the construction of the Manistee Carnegie Library.

Due to the generosity of Andrew Carnegie and other donators, many Manistee area residents still today have a wonderful historical library filled with interesting books.

Today the Manistee Carnegie library provides many educational programs such as the bird and bat program.

Ben Franklin and Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie and Ben Franklin are both men of history. Both of them had money and were respected by people. They both had so much money, that they gave it to charity organizations like libraries.

Andrew Carnegie began work with very little salary. He began an iron company and replaced all the wood brides with iron ones. Andrew Carnegie also gave his money to colleges and universities.

Libraries Built for the Common Good of Everyone

Andrew Carnegie was born in 1835 and died in 1919. He was a railroad commissioner, and gave most of his wealth to the public libraries, and schools for education. Andrew made most of his wealth by inventing items. The libraries were free for anyone to come into. One of the libraries that he gave most of his wealth to was the Manistee library, it is huge with loads of books and has computers to. Andrew also donated computers to type on and do reports for the newspaper.

Back then the libraries may not have as much education and books as they do know. I like to read myself, and type n computers. Andrew did a great job by educating American citizens, and he got respect for the rest of his life.

Working at the Sale
by Anna

Today I worked at our class's book sale. We made $65.41. Our class only thought that we would make $15.00. All of the money we made will go to our school library. We started the book sale because we were reading about philanthropic people that worked to help public libraries, like Andrew Carnage and Bill Gates. After we read about all that those people did we wanted to help our library too. They gave a lot more than we did but I still feel good about our donation.

Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates both were very rich. They were alike and different in many ways. They gave a lot of money to libraries to make them become better places. That makes them philanthropists.

Andrew Carnegie gave money to libraries because he wanted to help them. Bill Gates gave the money because he wanted to expand and improve the neighborhood libraries. He also wanted to improve the computers in the libraries because he invented Microsoft. Carnegie also wanted free libraries and so did Bill Gates.

That was the ways of Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates. They both wanted libraries to become better places. They were also very rich people who were very generous.

Benjamin Franklin was a smart smart man even though he could not read. But he was a really good inventor. He invented a lot of things like the stove. But the very best thing he invented is electricity. If we didn’t have electricity we would be burning coal or oil right know. Ben Franklin gave money for future public libraries.

Bill Gates gave millions of dollars to all libraries all around the U.S.A. He donated that money to Libraries Company.

Andrew Carnegie helped libraries. He helped to build them. He also gave them books. He built them because it helped some people in the United States to learn to read and write. He gave away 350 million dollars for all the libraries that he built and he put a lot of work into. Lots of people thought that he did lots of work for the common good. And lots of people like to go to libraries and read and learn about things that they may never heard of. I am very glad that Andrew Carnigie was around to help build us our libraries.

Next was Bill Gates. He helped libraries get computers so people can get to go online when they are at the library. Bill gates wife also helped out with the computers at the libraries so people can go online. He made Microsoft. He made it and he became very rich. He got like billions and billions of money. But he was not greedy with this money he used it to buy all these libraries a computer so people can go online and so people can spend time searching the web instead of always reading. He also just gives people the money to use it if they really need something.

I think these people helped other people out a lot. I like to go online sometimes and I would be happier when I go to the library to go online and read books and listen to the little stories that they have on radios and stuff.

Earning Money for Libraries
by Brenna

Sarina and I made a poster to advertise the book sale. It was a lot of fun. We had two days to make it. On the second day Robyn drew a book for us. The book sale went great we raised over 60 dollars for the library. I got to help out with the sale and I got to see how much all the books were. It was a lot of fun!
