USS Cobia

Here we are on the deck of the USS Cobia. This submarine was used during WW II. It is currently at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum. A submarine veteran of that war, Roland Soucy, was our tour guide. We learned so much first hand information from Mr. Soucy.

When we got to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, we went to a museum about submarines. We got a tour of the Cobia, a submarine that served in World War 2. They used sonar to get sounds and track down other submarines and ships. They also used Sonar to figure out the depth of the oceans or lakes. They used phones that didn’t use much electricity, and you have to hold down a button to talk. They had to sleep in very small beds. There were 39 men that had to sleep in 34 beds, so every time someone got out of bed someone else would go back in. ...Alexi

When we went to the Submarine we got a tore of it and it was very interesting. They had great technology back then and I learned that torpedoes are much bigger than I thought. In the city we went in they made 20 submarines but the submarine we went in was not made their, it was from Connecticut and Sunk 5 boats. In World War II they lost a lot of submarines. I heard that on the sub the toilet if flushed wrong would wash up the waste to the next person who used it. ...Donny

We also went on a submarine called the U.S.S. Cobia.A Girl named Gina showed us around inside it. It was used in World War 2. She told us all about it and we even go to go to a museum that had almost everything from the World War 2. Going on the Badger was the most amazing thing I have ever been on in my life. ...Erin

June 6, 2002 we went on the S.S. Badger for a field trip. It was a lot of fun!!!!! I stayed in the arcade for almost al the time. I also stay on the deck and lisond to my CD player.

I think that the submarine was very cool. We saw a torpedos, 5o cal guns, large anti attack guns, the mess hall, sleeping rooms, bath rooms, the engine room and the periscope.

The badger was so much fun that I would go again.

After a little while we finally got our turn on the submarine. It was kind of cramped. But there was enough room. We went through the torpedo room, which was my favorite room. We say a lot of controls and switches. He even showed us some bullet holes. Also on the submarine there were different kinds of guns attached to it. It was really cool. ...Jake

Yesterday, June 6, 02 we went to Ludington on a trip on the S.S. Badger. We got to go for a ride to Wisconsin to go to a museum with stuff about subs fighting in WWII. We even got to go inside a submarine called U.S Cobia. And Ryan Miller bought me and some more of his friends some torpedo juice. That is a special kind of root beer.

On the way to Wisconsin I had a lot of fun on the Badger. There was a little museum, a theater, bingo, an arcade were I spent most of my time and money, and a lot of other neat stuff. I thought it was really cool to watch the Badger take of into lake Michigan. When the captain took off from Wisconsin he honked his horn and it was cool because it was loud and long.

When I got hungry I went and got a piece of pizza and I thought it was really good. It was expensive though.

The badger is a steam engine that burns coal. The Badger is one of the only steam engine car ferries around. In the early days it was used for carrying Freit trains directly on to the Badger. They had two other boats at the harbor they were. In 1924 they made the first ice breaking steel car ferry named the Pere Marquette.

I got to go on the Badger it was the best fun ever. There is an arcade, gift shop, and a movie theater. On the top deck it is so fun. There is a place to go all the way around the boat. Some people enjoy lying by the bow in the sun. Me on the other hand had to explore the boat for cool features. We also played bingo and had some of their excellent cinnamon buns man were they good. They also had different activities like name that tune and a coloring contest.

There was also another amazing feature that was in store for us. We got to go on a World War 2 Submarine called the U.S.S Cobia. It is very cool because it has all the original guns and torpedo launchers. It also has a bunch of sirens and red lights. The Badger trip is the most fun thing that will ever happen to a kid take it from me.

I really liked the Badger trip and the submarine. My favorite part was the sub. It had a lot of levers and buttons. It also had a lot of small doors. She took us all the way down the sub. She also pushed some buttons so it would make sounds. I really liked the sub. ..Lucie

When we got to Manitowoc Wisconsin our class went to a museum. There was a real submarine. It was neat. It smelled weird inside but it was so cool. The submarine looked small outside but it was huge in the inside. I would hate to live in there if you worked for the army. ...Chelsea

June 6, 2002 was an exciting and exhausting day. Tomorrow we will willingly and eagerly go to the Mac Lab and write all about it! The text we write will be on these three pages. Give us another day or two and we will have in on line.
