Raising Salmon in the Third Grade Classroom

When the salmon eggs arrived, the tank was covered with a black tarp. The pipes in the back of the tank kept the water cool, just the way salmon like it. Just prior to release the salmon had grown to 3.5 - 4 inches in length.

Each day Students watched their growing salmon. They are learning about the life cycle of this, now local, fish.
Students in Mrs. Catanese's and Mrs. Goins' classes were excited about releasing the fish into Bowen Creek. Bowen's Creek begins in a spring fed pond. It's a pretty creek that meanders about five miles across the both woodsy and forest landscape before joining Lake Michigan. It's a perfect place for the young salmon to begin their life after the classroom.
Mrs. Bentley and the students did a water study after the release.

Mr. Zupin and Thomas recorded results of the water study. This is a learn and serve project. The students spent time learning about salmon.

Webmaster Note: By 2006 the Salmon project completed its 12th year.
