Aquatic Discovery at the Ludington State Park

Mr. Mauntler and Mrs. Furton took their second grade students on a great end of the year trip to the Ludington State Park on the Au Sauble River.

It was a warm and muggy day with plenty of wild life, including many hungry mosquitoes! Luckily the rain held off and it was a terrific trip.

Purpose: Pond Creature Discovery

Each small group, armed with net and pail, dug into the pond and sifted through the mud searching for aquatic life such as dragon fly nymph, snails, damsel fly nymphs, crayfish, and leech.

The students were were enthralled by all they found, unaware of the education value of the experience.

Everyone had wet, soggy feet., but that was expected.

Algae was seen by the young scientists.

The students visited the nature center where they viewed displays of small wild life: screech owl, fish, opossum, snakes and turtles were seen. There were a variety of Great Lakes maps.
The group picnicked on the beach and walked to the Au Sauble river dam where they watched alewives, bass, and pike in the river.

Michelle was a great guide and the students
enjoyed the many paths in the park.

Looking for small creatures

The students sifted through their bucket for signs of aquatic life. It was amazing all that they found.

Guide Michelle had much information to share with the eager listeners.

Here the students get a good look at the Au Sauble River Dam. Fish such as alewives, bass, and pike swim in this river.

What a beautiful place
to visit and learn.

The students stopped to pose with one of nature's art works.
